Origin/meaning

Bockenem became a possession of the Counts of Wohldenberg in 1225, who also granted the city rights in 1300. From 1314 onwards the city was ruled by the Hildesheim Abbey. The oldest seal shows St. Catharina and St. Pancratius, patron saints of the monastery and the town respectively. In front of the two saints is a small shield with the arms of Wohldenberg. The present arms do not longer show the saints, but show the arms of the Hildesheim Abbey, with the bend of the Counts of Wohldenberg. The bend is silver instead of red as in the arms of the family.
