BLANKENBERGE
Province : West-Vlaanderen
Additions: 1970 Uitkerke
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted by royal decree on January 9, 1841 and confirmed on October 13, 1987.
The base of the shield shows three canting mountains (Blankenberge means white/clear-mountains). The meaning of the silver bar in a black field is not known, it may be derived from the important dynasty of Van Borssele.
The oldest seal of the city, known from 1330, shows above a fish a white rock in a sea. A second seal, known since 1542 shows the same composition, but with two stars above the rock. The present arms are first mentioned in 1697.
The arms in the Koffie Hag/Café Hag albums +/- 1930 |
