Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1926 and show the lion of Hessen above a pair of glasses.

The origin of the glasses is not known. They first appear in seals from the 16th century and are used ever afterwards in images, seals and border stones. It has been suggested that the glasses are derived from the arms of the State of Mainz, as the area was part of Mainz. The lion as a symbol for Hessen appeared first in 1722.
