Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1923 and confirmed in 1970.

Billerbeck received city rights in 1318 from Bishop Ludwig of Münster. The oldest, 14th century, seal shows either St. Liudger, the patron saint, or the bishop of Münster. In front of the figure is a small shield with the above arms. The arms thus have never changed since. The arms are either canting (Beck from Bach or stream), or are derived from the arms of a local family, as a seal of Gerhard, judge in Billerbeck, from 1420 also shows a similar shield.
