Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of Ostfriesland (harpy) and the local castle. The harpy is originally the arms of the Cirksena family, counts of Ostfriesland. In the early 15th century the Cirksena family inherited the castle in Berum. In 1443 the castle was rebuilt. The family owned the castle until the late 17th century. In the 18th century it was used as the local courthouse.
