BERCHTESGADEN (BGD)

State : Bayern
Incorporated into : 1973 Berchtesgadener Land

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 16, 1962.

The two keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of the former Principality and Abbey of Berchtesgaden. The principality was directly sudject to the Emperor, which is symbolised by the Imperial Orb. The lower part shows a salt bucket, as salt mining historically was the main source of income in the region.
