The arms were officially granted on July 8, 1976.
 
The first quarter shows the Imperial eagle, as a symbol for the imperial estate (Reichsfronhof) in the area, which was first mentioned in 885. The lion is the lion of the Pfalz and indicates that the area historically was part of the Pfalz. The third quarter shows the arms of the local lord of Sponheim. The fourth quarter is canting, showing an arm with a beaker (Becher). That was already porposed as arms in 1956, see below.
