The lower half shows the bear's claws derived from the arms of the Counts of Hoya. The area belonged to the County Hoya until 1582. The upper part shows three linden leaves for the amalgamation of the three former municipalities Bassum, Freudenberg and Loge in 1896 to the new municipality of Bassum. The complete arms (see below), which are rarely used, show the shield with a mural crown, symbolising the 13th century Freudenburg castle, and two silver horses as supporters. The latter are the symbol of Niedersachsen.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 24, 1927 when Bassum received city status.
