Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 16, 1976.

The arms show a city with in the gate the arms of the Lords of Büren, who granted the city rights in 1195. The oldest known seal dates from 1299, which already showed the image of the present arms, the castle on a small hill with the family arms. The arms were officially granted in 1908 and were based on the oldest seal. Later rolls of arms only showed the arms of the family as the city arms, not the castle. The family ruled over the city until 1661.
