German |
Origin/meaningBarnstorf received town rights in 1546 and the oldest seals of the town date from the same time. The present arms are based on this seal and show the lion of the Counts of Diepholz, who ruled the town until 1585. The cross is most likely the symbol for St. Vitus, patron saint of the town. The church was named from the 13th-15th century also the Church of the Holy Cross.
