VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO

District : Faro

Brasão de Vila Real de Santo António (city)

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 2, 1932 (below) and with a new crown (above) after 1988.

The arms show a fishing boat with net and four fish, all symbolic for the importance of fishing for the town and region. The two heads in the chief are those of Afonso III, King of Portugal (who conquered the Algarve from Arabs) and an Arab Sheik (the previous rulers of the Algarve)
