Blason de Orcines

Official blason

  • (fr) Tiercé en pairle: au 1er d'or à la croix de gueules, au 2e d'azur au caducée d'or, au 3e d'argent à l'ours rampant de sable, langué et armé de gueules.

Origin/meaning

The bear is a canting element (Ursus in Latin). The caduceus is the attribute of the Roman God Mercury whose temple was built atop the Puy de Dome located in the municipality. The God Mercury also had in Gaul the nickname of Ursin: this God, guide of the paths of the earth, was also the one who led to the underworld, which joins the etymology "ORCINUS" (hell, mortuary). The cross is taken from the ars of the chapter of Clermont Cathedral, owner of Orcines until 1789.
