Origin/meaning

According to some sources the arms were granted on June 3, 1567 by Archbishop Johann Jakob Kuen von Belasy of Salzburg, as the city at the time belonged to the State of Salzburg.

The oldest use of the arms dates from 1638 when the arms are shown on the seal of the city. The arms are canting, showing a beech (Buche) in a river (Bach). The arms have not changed since, although the size and shape of the tree have changed considerably during the centuries.
