AFRITZ AM SEE
State : Kärnten
District : Villach-Land
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on September 18, 1992.
From 1662 up to (probably) 1848 Afritz (now: Afritz am See) and its neighbouring villages were under the rule of the old aristocratic family of the Counts of Porcia (later on: Princes of Porcia). This family has been residing at the castle of Porcia near Pordenone, west of Udine, in Friuli, Italy, since the 12th century.
In 1960 the Porcia family authorized the representants of the municipality of Afritz to use elements of its own family coat of arms as a base for a coat of arms newly to be designed for the village/municipality of Afritz.
Whereas the Porcia arms is represented by a vaulted oval shield with, as a main feature, six golden lilies figuring on a blue surface, the newly created coat of arms of Afritz am See contents itself with five yellow lilies instead of six.
