Origin/meaning

The arms are identical to the composition on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1221. The arms were devised in the 19th century and colours were added. Later seals all showed a similar composition, with the addition of different elements.

The wall and towers indicate the city character of Remagen, the meaning and origin of the crowned wolf is not known. There have been some speculations based on the origin of Remagen as Roman city, or that the wolf is derived as a symbol of St. Remaclus (and thus a partial canting element). This idea came from the arms of Stavelot in Belgium, which show the saint as well as a wolf. There are indications that the Stavelot Abbey had some possessions in or near the city, but it is unlikely that the abbey would be so important that the city would have taken the wolf as a symbol for the Abbey; except simply as a canting symbol for Remagen-Remaclus.
