Origin/meaning

The seal above dates from 1391 and shows quartered arms, with in I the arms of the diocese, II and III the lions of Berg and Jülich and in IV the chevrons of the county Ravensberg. The bishop was the son of Wilhelm of Berg from the House Jülich-Heimbach, counts of Ravensberg.

On a previous seal (1390) the arms are different showing in the first quarter a climbing bear (?)
