AUSTIN BERNARD VAUGHAN
Born : September 27, 1927
Deceased : June 25, 2000
Auxiliary bishop of New York, 1977-2000; Titular Bishop of Cluain Iraird
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
Bishop Vaughan has chosen a coat-of-arms with symbols affixed to a field of green. A carpenter's square, a chevron silver honoring St. Joseph, the Patron of the Seminary where he has taught and now is rector, divides the upper and lower halves of the shield.
In the upper left-hand corner, a gold shamrock is the symbol for Ireland and recalls his family's roots in County Clare and his titular (honorary) see at Clonard in County Meath. The top center has a pair of crossed golden keys symbolic of Rome, where Bishop Vaughan was ordained and spent the first years of his ministry. The golden crescent is a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary whose churches and feasts and doctrine and patronage have all played an important role in the bishop's life.
The golden torch represents the Statue of Liberty, calling to mind the, country and city of Bishop Vaughan's allegiance and the milllons of people who have flocked here from all over the world and make up the flock of Christ to which he is called.
The bishop's motto Is: "To Jesus through Mary."
