Origin/meaning

The arms show a canting church (Kirche) with an ax. The church already appeared on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1406. The origin of the ax is not known, but may be related to the importance of forestry for the town. The ax nearly disappeared on later seals of the city, but when the above arms were granted in 1903 the ax was shown as on the oldest seals.
