Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The silver crescent indicates Our Blessed Mother's immaculate purity, patroness of the Legion of Mary with which the Bishop has long been identified. The two harts or stags facing each other with a shield between them on which we find the cross is taken from the arms of St. Charles Borromeo, the Bishop's principal patron.

The red seal symbolizes the redemptive blood of the Savior, the fruits of which the Bishop is empowered to communicate to his flock.

The cross and the crown on the blue field and the silver star are taken from the Diocesan arms of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, indicating the Bishop's place of origin and the scene of his labors as priest and auxiliary Bishop.

The motto "Servus tuus filius ancillae", is taken from the 115th psalm translated, "I am Thy slave, the son of Thy handmaid." lt expresses complete consecration to Jesus in filial imitation of the loyalty of Mary, the faithful handmaid of the Lord."
