History: Raised in 1702 as Meredith's Regiment, in 1751 33rd Foot, and in 1786 as the 67th Foot. These two Regiments in 1881 become 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Hampshire Regiment. The prefix Royal was granted in 1946.

THE ROYAL HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT, BRITISH ARMY

History: Raised in 1702 as Meredith's Regiment, in 1751 33rd Foot, and in 1786 as the 67th Foot. These two Regiments in 1881 become 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Hampshire Regiment. The prefix Royal was granted in 1946.

Official blazon

The Hampshire Rose with above the Royal Tiger standing on a scroll, th whole enclosed in a laurel wreath ensigned with a crown; on the lover part of the of the wreath a scroll inscribed "Royal Hampshire". The Tiger. crown and wreath in white metal and the rose and scroll in gilding metal.

Origin/meaning

The Red Rose, a badge of King Henry V, who according to tradition conferred it upon the City of Winchester in 1415 as he passed through on his way to Agincourt. As Winchester is the Shire Town of Hampshire, it later become symbol of the whole county, and later incorporated into the County Arms.
