Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 1st, 1991.

The green field symbolises the nature and natural reserves in the area. The cross symbolises the first chapel erected in the beginning of the 18th century, dedicated to St. Mary. The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of St. Mary.

The bridge symbolises the historical important wooden bridge in the town.

The shield is surrounded by grape and strawberry branches, the main agricultural crops in the area.

The scroll shows the name of the town and the motto Sub Lege Libertas, or Liberty under the Law. The dates symbolise the settlement (1830) and the granting of city status (1859).
