Oorsprong/verklaring :
Zuiddorpe was een heerlijkheid, die in de Middeleeuwen in handen was van het geslacht Van Gistelle. Dit geslcht bewoonde het kasteel de Moere in Zuiddorpe. Het wapen van het geslacht was een rode keper op een veld van goud. Dit wapen is terug te vinden in het wapen van Axel.

De boekweitbloemen uit het wapen van Zuiddorpe zijn ontleend aan een reis van Joos van Gistelle (1446-1516). deze Joos was een machtig man en maakte een bedevaartstocht naar het heilige land. Hij bezocht onder andere Rome, Palestina, Egypte, Syrie en Perzie. Op zijn tochten had hij zaadjes meegenomen van de boekweitplant, iets dat ten strengste verboden was. Na zijn terugkomst begon hij met het telen van boekweit, als eerste in de Nederlandden. Ter herinnering zijn de boekweitbloemen opgenomen in het wapen.
