The arms are derived from the arms of the Counts of Strijen. Until Zevenbergen became a separate Estate in the 13th century, it belonged to Strijen. The Lords of Strijen-Zevenbergen adopted the arms in the opposite colours of the arms of Strijen. The first Lord known to use these arms was Hugo van Strijen van Zevenbergen.
On the local seal from 1395-1491 the shield is placed before a tree, plante d in a seven-topped hill with some sheep. The hill (zeven bergen, or severn mountains) is canting. Later a 16th century seal showed the letters VII B, otherwise the arms have never changed.
