"In de lengte doorsneden; de regterhelft van goud, beladen met een halve zwarte arend; en de linkerhelft zwart, beladen met 3 goude leliën, geplaatst 2 en 1. Het schild gedekt met een goude kroon."

Oorsprong/verklaring :
Het wapen is vanaf de 15e eeuw bekend op stadszegels. Het eerste zegel uit 1420 vertoont nog niet het wapen, maar een Gothische nis, waarin St.Geertruid, in de rechterhand een bloem, in de linker een palmtak; ter weerszijde een knielende monnik. Een tweede zegel uit 1496 (Van den Bergh) of 1426 (info gemeente Nijefurd) vertoont al wel het wapen met de adelaar en de lelies. Ook op alle volgende zegels en afbeeldingen komt het wapen als zodanig voor.

Waar het wapen vandaan komt is niet bekend. De halve adelaar is een veelvuldig voorkomende figuur in persoonswapens in Friesland. Het zou dus afgeleid kunnen zijn van een grietman of stadsbestuurder van Workum in de 15e eeuw. De lelies zouden of uit een persoonswapen, of van de Mariaverering afgeleid kunnen zijn.

De gemeente voerde het wapen op briefpapier.
