Oorsprong/verklaring :
Het wapen wordt vaak afgebeeld met een gouden kroon met 5 bladeren, maar de gemeente voert het officiële wapen.

Het wapen stelt waarschijnlijk de Vecht voor. Het is bekend sinds de 16e eeuw, maar is waarschijnlijk ouder. Van de stad zijn echter al sinds de 14e eeuw zegels bekend. Op het oudste zegel komt het wapen echter niet voor. Het vertoont een kerk, met op de voorgrond een wapen met een leeuw. Dit is waarschijnlijk de Hollandse leeuw. Op een tweede zegel, bekend sinds 1552 komt eveneens een kerk voor, maar nu staat het wapen met de paal op de voorgrond. Ook op een contrazegel uit de 17e eeuw komt het wapen voor, nu zonder kerk. Een 18e eeuws zegel vertoont vervolgens alleen de kerk en het laatste zegel juist alleen het wapen.

Door het door elkaar gebruiken van het wapen en een kerk op de zegels werd lange tijd gedacht dat Weesp twee wapens had. Een wapen met een kerk heeft de stad echter nooit gevoerd.

Van het wapen was ook het wapen van Weesperkarspel afgeleid.

De gemeente voert een logo, gebaseerd op het wapen, op briefpapier en andere bescheiden.
