"Gezeshoekt van goud; een hartschild van azuur met een lelie van zilver. Het schild gedekt met een gouden kroon van 3 bladeren en 2 parels en gehouden door 2 gouden zeeleeuwen, gestaart van zilver, getongd, genageld en gevind van keel."

Oorsprong/verklaring :
Het wapen stelt de dijken voor, gebouwd met zeshoekige betonblokken. De kleur is goud om de kostbaarheid van het gehele project aan te geven. Het hartschild is het wapen van Ir Lely. De zeeleeuwen geven de ontstaansgeschiedenis weer.

De gemeente voerde geruime tijd het wapen in gestyleerde vorm op briefpapier en andere bescheiden. Over deze vormgeving is nogal wat te doen geweest. Het wapen werd er namelijk niet veel duidelijker op. Het gehele wapen is namelijk in zwart-witte gegolfde lijntjes weergegeven. Diverse grafische ontwerpers waren het hier niet mee eens, hetgeen leidde tot een discussie in (grafische) vakbladen.
