ELSAUCanton : Zürich
![]() Origin/meaning: The arms of Elsau are known since the second half of the 19th century. The original arms are identical to the arms of the Counts of Heiligenberg, whose arms are known since 1340. The counts had, however, no relation with the village. Why the arms were chosen in the last century is not clear. When in 1922 Schottikon was added to Elsau, the arms were changed. As the two villages in Schottikon, Ober- and Unterschottikon both used a fleur-de-lis in their arms, two fleur-de-lis were added to the Elsau arms. The original colours (yellow on blue for Oberschottikon and in black and white on red for Unterschottikon) were replaced by the black colour of the original arms of Elsau. Literature : Ziegler, Die Gemeindewappen des Kantos Zürich, Zürich, 1977.
