		Sveriges Kommunvapen Swedish Civic Heraldry UPPSALA Additions : 1974 Björklinge, Bälinge, Gamla Uppsala, Lagga, Läby Origin/meaning : The old arms were granted in 1943 and the new modern lion was granted in 1986. When the lion first was used by the city of Uppsala is not known. The oldest recorded use dates from 1737, when the lion appears in the new seals of the city. Ever since the lion has been the arms of Uppsala. The meaning of the lion is also not known. It may be that it is derived from the Swedish Royal arms, as Uppsala was an important city since it received city rights in the 13th century. Literature : Nevéus and De Wærn, 1992.
