VÄSTERBOTTENS LÄN
Origin/meaning :
The province was created in 1810 and the new arms for the province showed the savage of Lappland and the fish of Ångermansland, the two older landscapes in which the province was situated. The older symbol for the larger Västerbotten was the reindeer, but this symbol was already taken by the province of Norrbotten.
In the 1920s the reindeer was re-introduced in the arms, in the first field (see below), but these arms were not officially granted. Finally in 1949 the present arms were granted, with the symbols of the three former landscapes.
