SWEDISH CIVIC HERALDRY
Arms of Historical Provinces (Landskapsvapnen)
When king Gustav I (Vasa) died in 1560 his son, the new king Erik XIV, tried to have the most impressing funeral ever seen in Sweden. The reason was that the House of Vasa had to convince the high nobility of their rightness to the throne. Gustav I was the first king of the house of Vasa and the first Swedish king after union of Kalmar (Kalmarunionen).
Inspired of King Charles V funeral in 1557 Erik XIV started to create coat of arms for all provinces (Landskap) At that time Finland was a part of Sweden and the Finnish provincial coats of arms were created at the same time.
