SOUTH AFRICA

|
South Africa has a complicated history with regard to administrative bodies. Historically the country was divided in States. Some time during the apartheid regime semi-independent black homelands were created. Recently new, smaller, provinces were created. The States (and provinces) are divided in smaller units. Different types have existed through the centuries, some with arms, some without. In addition cities and municipalities also existed as separate, even smaller units, again some with arms, some without. I have divided the South African Civic Heraldry in the groups below : States and Provinces, Homelands, Disctrict councils and the like, and cities and municipalities.
South Africa has 11 official languages, English, Afrikaans and 9 Bantu languages, which are not spoken all over the country. In this index page I will only mention English or Afrikaans, sometimes both when both are commonly used or not very similar (like Cape Town/Kaapstad). On the pages of the individual towns I will include the local Bantu name, whenever I know the name.
