Civic Heraldry of Ukraine Українська Геральдика KUPIANSK Origin/meaning: The arms were granted on September 28, 1781. The arms show in the base a marmot, an animal which was quite abundant in the area at the time. The upper half shows the arms of the Voronezh province, to which the town belonged at the time. In 1797 Kupiansk became part of the Kharkiv province, and the arms were subsequently changed, the arms of Voronezh were replaced by the arms of Kharkiv province. In the late 19th century B. Kene designed new arms for the city. The main charge was still the marmot, but the (new) provincial arms were placed in the first quarter. The arms were not adopted.
