Origin/meaning:
The arms were adopted in April 1842. The arms show in the upper half the local fortress and defence lines. The lower half shows a Tartar, as the city was settled by Tartars.
In November 1867 B. Kene designed new arms with the same symbolism, fortress and Tartar, but with in the first quarter the arms of the Potalvska province. The arms were not adopted.
