KERCH (Керч)Oblast : Crimea
Origin/meaning: The arms are a better design of the historical arms, see below. The arms show a griffiin above a crown. The griffin is the ancient symbol of the Kingdom of the Bosporus (until the 1st century AD). The key symbolises that the city is on the strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. The shield is placed on two black anchors, which symbolise the two seas. The star was awarded to the city as a Hero of the Soviet Union.
The previous arms were granted on April 6, 1845. Literature : Panyenko, 1996; http://heraldry.com.ua. |
