Civic Heraldry of Ukraine УкраїнськаГеральдика CHUDNIV Origin/meaning: The historical arms of Chudniv show a fortress from which rises a hand with a sabre as a symbol of defence. The arms symbolise the importance of the city as a fortress. The above arms were adopted on June 22, 1994. The oldest arms of the city date from the late 18th century and show in the upper half the arms of the Volynsk province. In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene designed simplified arms for the city with the same symbolism. The provincial arms are now placed in the first quarter. Literature : Panyenko, 1996; Ukrainian heraldry
