Civic Heraldry of Ukraine УкраїнськаГеральдика CHERKASY Origin/meaning: The arms were adopted on January 11, 1995. The arms are based on the historical arms of the city, see below, which showed a horse in the base and in the upper part the arms of the Kyiv province. In the modern arms the upper half shows a Cossack symbolising the fact that the city was a main centre of Cossacks in the 15th-18th century. The Cossack already was shown on the oldest arms of the city, dating from 1791. The horse in the base may also have been derived from the old arms, as a simplified version of the mounted Cossack. The arms from the early 19th century. The arms from 1791. In the 19th century two other proposals for arms of the city were made. Both were not adopted. In 1851 a proposal was made with the arms of Kyiv province and the Cossack (see below). In 1864 B.
