Civic Heraldry of Ukraine УкраїнськаГеральдика BRATSLAV Origin/meaning: The arms were granted on January 22, 1796. The arms show the Imperial eagle with on its chest a shield with a castle. The castle is the local castle built in 1616. The main tower of the castle is destroyed, as a symbol for the many sieges the city had to endure. The oldest arms of the city, granted in 1497 by the Lithuanian Grand-Duke showed the local patron saint, St. Peter. On March 15, 1864, B.Kene proposed new arms for the town with a slightly different composition. The arms showed the main castle again, but more clearly partially destroyed.
