Civic Heraldry of Ukraine Українська Геральдика BALAKLAVA (Балаклава) Oblast : Crimea Origin/meaning: The arms were adopted on September 20, 2002. The upper part of the arms show the cross of St. Georg . It symbolises the famous Battle of Balaklava as well as the St. George monastery in Balaklava. The wall symbolises the Chembalo fortress in the town. The golden bar shows a typical ancient Greek decoration, symbolising the settlement of ancient Greeks in the region. The three fish are a canting symbol, the name is derived from the Turkish Balıklava (a fish nest). The bunch of grapes symbolises the viticulture. In the 19th century B.Kene proposed arms for the town. In the first quarter there was the arms of Tavrijs'ka province. The arms symbolised the Genoese period of Balalava of the 14th and 15th centuries and with events of the Crimean war (1853 - 1856). The arms were not adopted. Literature : Ukrainian heraldry
