TÀRREGA
Province : Lleida
Origin/meaning:
The arms, quarterly, show the chequy Or and Gules taken from the arms of the Tàrrega family, lords of the local castle (11th century), and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or): the city was linked to the royal House of Barcelona since its origins, and in 1522 passed definitively to the Crown. The two-headed eagle is probably a privilege granted to the council by the count-king Charles I the Emperor. These arms have been officially granted on 29th July 1996.
