SANT MATEU DE BAGES
Province : Barcelona
Origin/meaning:
The angel with the book symbolizes St. Matthew the Evangelist, the local patron saint, as writer of the Gospel (with the letters L and G, the initials for "Liber Generationis"). The local castle (11th century) belonged, since the 13th century, to the Boixadors (family represented here by their arms, a hind Argent on Gules), and later to the families Cardona (represented by a thistle Or on Gules taken from their arms) and Peguera (symbolized by their arms, a crowned lion Gules on Argent). These arms have been officially granted on 14th November 1985.
