PALAU-SOLITÀ I PLEGAMANS
(until 2000) PALAU DE PLEGAMANS
Province : Barcelona
Origin/meaning:
Palau-solità was first mentioned in 955, and Plegamans in 962; the two villages merged in 1698 and formed a royal council. The upper half shows the canting arms of Palau-solità, also named La Sagrera: a "palau" with a "pala" on top (Catalan for "palace" and "shovel, spade" respectively), and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or) reminding the royal jurisdiction over the council. The lower half shows the canting arms of lords of the castle of Plegamans, the Vilatorta family: a "mà" (Catalan for "hand") Argent on Gules, with an indented bordure Argent. These arms have been officially granted on 7th October 1997.
