Heraldica Española - Spanish Civic Heraldry

OSOR

Province : Gerona

Origin/meaning:
The upper half showed the two crossed keys, symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of the village. The old name of the village also used to be Sant Pere d'Osor" (Saint Peter of Osor).
The lower half of the arms shows a goat, and is a symbol for the former Lords of Cabrera, who owned many possessions in the present municipality from the 11th until the 14th century. The goat is a canting symbol, cabra meaning goat in Catalan. The goat is surrounded by a walled bordure, that symbolises the Montsoriu castle, the residence of the family.

Osor never used its own arms until 1988. The local seals showed either the Spanish National arms, the arms of Catalunya or just the text Osor. In 1988 the new arms were devised. The first design showed the goat and the keys in a single field, but in the second design it was changed to the present arms.

The first design of 1988.
