The name of the town is related with the spanish word "Cebra" now meaning "Zebra" (hence the zebra in the arms) but formerly meaning "Spanish ibex", an animal more likely to be found in Spain than a zebra is. "Cebrero" is an old word no longer used today and meaning "A rugged mountain place which is preferred by Spanish ibex".
