BELCHITE
Province : Zaragoza
The barony of Belchite was bestowed to don Iñigo Beretervide by king Phillip II of Spain, in 1549, as a recognition to Beretervidens important role as an organizer of defense forces against the Moorish in the Aragonese region of Belchite and the Basque Country. At the end of that century the "Caserio Beretervide" was built, and it remained in the family's hands for long generations. The last family member that occupied the building was the Countess of Pardo Glorioso, after whose death the property was sold and transformed into a residence complex for several families. The house still stands on top of a steep hill overlooking the town of Tolosa, and the stone-carved coat of arms of the Beretervidens still remains on top of the main entrance to the manor. These arms are also used as arms of the town.
