ARSÈGUEL

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on July 9, 1993.
In the 16th century, the Catalan nobility was divided in two rival factions, Nyerros and Cadells, that led a continuous struggle between them. It is intended to say that Nyerros defended the rights of the landlords, and Cadells were for the rights of the peasants and the people of towns and villages. In 1592, the Spanish king, Philip II, sent his army against the castle of Arsèguel, owned by Joan Cadell, the leader of the Cadells; the castle was seiged and destroyed.
The arms show the ancient castle of Arsèguel on a hill (now in ruins), and the three dogs around refer to the Cadells, that in Catalan mean also "puppies".
