ZMIGROD


Origin/meaning:
The arms are canting for both the Polish and German (Trachenberg) name of the town. "Zmija" means snake or serpent, and "grod" means town, or in German Drache means dragon and Berg mountain.

Zmigrod received city rights in 1253 and the image of dragon and tower already appeared on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1402. All later seals have shown the same composition, but the size and shape of the elements as well as as the position of the dragon have changed often during the years, as can be seen by the image of Hupp :
