SWIECIE (Schwetz)
 Origin/meaning:
The arms are based on the 14th century seal of the city, but they have changed considerable. The two crescents were originally two, slightly bend, pales. Their origin is not known, most likely they are derived from the arms of some family. On a 15th century seal the pales are changed into crescents and the shield is now divided. Since the late 16th century the candle appears instead of the division line. The candle may be canting, swieca=candle.
The arms as used in the 19th century.
The history of the arms is also 'explained' by the following story :
In the middle ages there was a king. Once he was sailing on the boat.
Sudenly, the night came over. He decided to stop for some rest. It was moon-lit night, and the king saw this view: moon on the sky, a candle on the boat, and the"second moon" reflecting on the water.
Literature : Hupp 1893; Modern image obtained from Laszlo Szirtes, Hungary. ; story from Lukasz Szolginia.
