RACIBORZ


Origin/meaning:
The arms of the city (German name Ratibor) show the eagle of Upper Silezia and a wheel. The wheel is a canting element in German, Rad=wheel. The combination is known from a seal dating from 1296 and has not changed since. During the 19th and early 20th century the eagle was shown in the wrong colours, silver on red, with or without golden beak and fangs, which is shown by the images below:


The arms as show in the 'Deutsche Staedtewappen' (+/-1890), by Hupp (1920s) and in the Abadie albums (1932)
