Herbarz Miast Polskich Polish Civic Heraldry GORA Province: Dolny Slask County : Góra Origin/meaning: The arms show St. Cathatine, the local patron saint, between two towers. The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1310 and shows two towers with in between the arms with helmet and crest of the Dukes of Silezia (a black eagle with silver crescent in a golden shield), who ruled the city and had granted the city rights. A second seal, from 1326, shows St. Catherine between the towers instead of the small shield. All later seals have shown the saint with towers, although the actual composition differed widely in details. When the city became Polish in 1945 the saint was removed and the oldest arms were used, see image below. After 1989 the city returned to the use of the saint.
