CZARNE
 Origin/meaning:
The hammer in the arms is clearly a canting symbol, the German name of the town is Hammerstein (hammer-stone). The sun and crescent are most likely religious symbols. The arms are known from the oldest seal of the city, which is known since the 16th century. All later seals, except one, show the same arms.
The only seal of the city that shows another image dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. It does not show any arms at all, but on the right a hill with two working miners, and on the left side a man, cutting a tree. In the middle the eye of God is shining.

Literature : Upper image obtained from Laszlo Szirtes, Hungary; background from Hupp, O: Kaffee Hag albums, 1920s.
